Status of Products Under Development & Research Trials Proposed for the 1981 Field Season

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Review the status of a number of the pest control products at various stages in the Institute's mill at Sault Ste. Marie and propose for further testing and development during the 1981 field season.

Key Findings: New methodologies for carbamate insecticides have been developed and studies on the accumulation of fenitrothion in forestry substrates for up to 5 consecutive years of application. The studies suggest that it takes several years of treatment before significant amounts accumulate.

Maine Spruce Budworm Cooperative Growth Study Draft

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Designed to establish the basis for monitoring the effects of the spruce budworm infestation in our Spruce-Fir region.

Key Findings: The initial measurement year has provided basic stand information and an estimate of the extent of the budworm activity.

Problem Addressed: Use of insecticides as spruce budworm control

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Describe the methods of approach and the interim results to questions regarding spray programs against spruce budworm

Key Findings: The perennial trends of densities in this array of predatory, phytophagous, and fungivorous arthropods do not support the hypothesis that fenitrothion has a profound influence on the community resident in balsam fir crowns.

Experimental Aerial Applications of Methomyl, Phoxim and Trichlorfon for Control of Choristoneura fumiferana on White Spruce in Quebec, 1975

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Presented for consideration by regulatory authorities and resource managers as background information for the development of recommendations in forest pest management

Key Findings: Each of the three conventional spray treatments provided significant mortality of larvae populations in the selected plantation compartments, but none provided the required level of foliage protection.
