Assessing and Modeling Standing Deadwood Attributes Under Alternative Silvicultural Regimes in the Acadian Forest region of Maine, USA

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Snags in various stages of decay were inventoried across eight silvicultural treatments in eastern spruce–fir forests in central Maine nearly 60 years after treatments were initiated. Several modeling strategies were developed to estimate number of snags per hectare in various stages of decay.
Key Findings: Help with reducing disparities between observed and modeled snag stocking levels and further understanding of relationships between live and standing dead trees inherent to eastern spruce-fir forests.

Effect of gap harvesting on epiphytes and bark-dwelling arthropods in the Acadian forest of central Maine

Problem Addressed: Epiphyte and Arthropod Communities
Goal(s)/Objective(s): To determine effects on epiphyte and anthropod communities from red maple trees
Key Findings: Arthropod and epiphyte assemblages dwelling on the bark of red maple trees located in undisturbed forest and harvest gaps varied with height.Canonical correlation analysis revealed a positive association between bryophytes, Collembola, and Araneae. A strong correlation between Collembola and Araneae suggested a possible trophic interaction that may be affected by gap harvesting through a reduction in bryophyte abundance.

Key Findings: Maine came very late to creating a Public Estate; private initiative was critical.
Recommendation: Use more easements; round out units in North, emphasize needs in Southern Maine

Key Findings: There is a range of variability in key crown structural attributes due to inherent species differences, but models fit across multiple species can perform quite well as the amount of explained variation was relatively high.
