Baxter State Park 2015 Research Summary Report

Problem Addressed: Visitor characteristics, travel behavior, and perceptions of tourism
Goal(s)/Objective(s): To understand how changing weather and climate could impact visitors in the Katahdin region by conducting visitor surveys.
Key Findings: Approximately 50% of respondents for both surveys ranked the expected weather as either very important or important in selecting BSP or the Katahdin region as their destination
Recommendation: Visitors to Baxter State Park and the Katahdin region may be receptive to climate change information, studies conducted in the park, or management actions taken to address the impacts that climate change may have in the area

Problem Addressed: How do Maine residents view forests, forestry, and the emerging bioproducts industry.
Goal(s)/Objective(s): Explore Maine resident views toward forest conditions, practices, and new forest uses for bioenergy and other products.
Key Findings: Forest sustainability is a key concern both state-wide and in mill towns.
Recommendation: Maine residents express strong support for forestry and forest products. Sustainable harvesting is a precondition, as is stakeholder engagement in the development of new forest-based processing technologies.

CRSF Family Forest Program Overview 2015

Problem Addressed: Describes active research projects in the CRSF Family Forest Program
Goal(s)/Objective(s): Provide relevant research for current issues facing family forests: forest pests, timber harvesting, recreation access, intergenerational transfer, etc.
Key Findings: CRSF is actively engaged in research and outreach that benefits Maine's non-industrial private landowners (also called family forest or small woodland owners). Mainers owning small parcels of land (10-1,000 acres) comprise 34% of the forests in Maine.
