Goal(s)/Objective(s): To understand how changing weather and climate could impact visitors in the Katahdin region by conducting visitor surveys.
Key Findings: Approximately 50% of respondents for both surveys ranked the expected weather as either very important or important in selecting BSP or the Katahdin region as their destination
Recommendation: Visitors to Baxter State Park and the Katahdin region may be receptive to climate change information, studies conducted in the park, or management actions taken to address the impacts that climate change may have in the area

Key Findings: Softwoods generally had lower nutrient concentrations and higher C:N-ratios than hardwoods; N:P-ratios did not differ between hardwoods and softwoods.

The role of herbicides for enhancing forest productivity and conserving land for biodiversity in North America

Problem Addressed: Do herbicides increase forest productivity, and are they compatible with the objectives of wildlife management and biodiversity conservations?
Key Findings: If herbicides are properly used, current research indicates that the negative effects on wildlife are usually short-term and that herbicides can be used to meet wildlife habitat objectives.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Benchmark and calibrate three submodels of the Forest Vegetation Simulator-Northeast variant (FVS-NE).
Key Findings: An assessment of overall model performance should be conducted if calibrated submodels are used and alternative modeling strategies be explored to better represent the allometry and growth of the important trees species across the northeastern United States.

Comparing Strategies for Modeling Individual-Tree Height and Height-to-Crown Base Increment in Mixed-Species Acadian Forests of Northeastern North America

Problem Addressed: Lack of prediction methods for annual tree height increment and height-to-crown base increment.
Key Findings: There is an advantage to incorporating species as a random effect in individual-tree models and the effectiveness of modeling tree crown recession directly for application in mixed-species forest growth and yield models was demonstrated.

Key Findings: Forest, industry, and pest control options have all changed. WE have one well observed outbreak but next one may be different.
Recommendation: Continue the march already begun by State with intense early monitoring, and industry and University with planning, education, and information.
