Forest Pest Management recommends areal application of insecticides to protect spruce and fir an about 3,000 acres of Loring Air Force base and adjacent National Guard land. This recommendation is based on high hazard stand conditions and the high budworm populations expected in 1984. Without protection, these stands would experience increasing tree mortality. Forest Pest Management also recommends that Loring Air Force Base adopt a long range forest management plan that uses silviculture practices to reduce future budworm damage.
