USDA Technical Note from 1940.
The development of residual stands following thinning or selective cutting in the northern hardwoods of the Northeast has been generally unsatisfactory where yellow birch or paper birch are important components of the stand. An even-aged 60-year old stand on the Bartlett Experimental Forest was selected for intensive study began in 1931 and concluded in 1937.
