Changes in Social Capital and Networks: A Study of Community-Based Environmental Management Through a School-Centered Research Program

A History of Recent Infestations of the Spruce Budworm in Northwestern Ontario, and an Estimate of Resultant Timber Losses

Problem Addressed: Spruce Budworm infestations in the Lac Seul and Lake Nipigon regions of northwestern Ontario
Goal(s)/Objective(s): Make deductions which indicate when the first severe defoliation occurred.
Key Findings: The potential for future losses within the areas affected by 1955 is almost double the amount destroyed.

A Cooperative Pilot Study of the Insecticide Sumithion

Problem Addressed: Insecticide effects
Goal(s)/Objective(s): Evaluate the effectiveness of a selected treatment of Sumithion in controlling the spruce budworm and the effect of Sumithion on birds, fish, and aquatic invertebrates
Key Findings: The stonefly larvae seem to have suffered the greatest reduction.
Recommendation: In late spring of 1969, samples of aquatic insects in the test and control stream should be undertaken to determine the recovery of fish food organisms.
