Plots were established in spruce-fir stands at three locations in Maine. These plots were fertilized with treatments consisting of nitrogen (168 ks per ha), phosphorus (72 kg per ha), and potassium (14o kg per ha) singly and in various combinations. Seven growing seasons after treatment, dominant and co dominant red spruce (Picea rabens Sarg.) were harvested from all plots. Stem analyses were done and the effects of location, pretreatment dbh, rate of diameter growth during the five growing seasons preceding treatment, live crown ratio, and individual nutrients on change in rate of volume growth after fertilization were determined.
