Key Findings: If we possess enough knowledge about the systems involved and can monitor or measure the appropriate parameters, it might be possible to predict when and where outbreaks will occur.

Determination of Fenitrothion Residues in Honeybees and Their Products

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Describe the development of a gas-liquid chromatographic (GLC) method of analysis of the parent insecticide, its oxon and the cresol hydolysis product in honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) pollen, beeswax and honey from forested areas which had been treated with fenitrothion applied by aircraft.
Key Findings: Average recovery for the insecticide ranged from 84% in bees to 93% in honey.

Problem Addressed: The evaluation of spray success using color and color infrared aerial photography
Goal(s)/Objective(s): Determine the location and amount of mortality caused by the spruce budworm, detect areas of new budworm attack earlier than with present models, identify forests requiring spraying or other control measures to prevent excessive tree mortality and timber loss from budworm attack more efficiently than with present methodology.

Effect of Pesticides on Cholinesterase from Aquatic Species: Crayfish, Trout and Fiddler Crab

Problem Addressed: Use of pesticides and the development of quantitative assays for low concentrations of these pesticides
Key Findings: Nineteen pesticides were tested for inhibition of cholinesterase activity derived from trout brain, crayfish nervous system and whole fiddler crabs. Inhibition by low concentrations of a few of these pesticides permitted a very sensitive and selective assay. Chlorinated pesticides as a class showed little inhibitory effect on trout and crab cholinesterase. Carbamates strongly inhibit all three enzymes.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Presents the results of studies carried out in New Brunswick to determine immediate effects and short-term impact of a series of trials employing several chemical insecticides at varying dosage rates upon breeding bird and small mammal populations and benthic organisms in treated streams
Key Findings: Aminocarb employed as an adulticide had no significant effects on bird or aquatic insect populations
