The Impact of Two Experimentally-Applied Aminocarb Formulations on Stream Periphyton Communities

Problem Addressed: Adverse effects of insecticides used against spruce budworm

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Assess the impact of experimentally-applied Aminocarb Flowable and Aminocarb in 585 Oil on the microphytic component of stream vegetation.

Key Findings: Analyses of periphyton samples collected immediately following spray applicaiton and at 7h post spray in effect indicated no accumulation of aminocarb had occurred. However, ppm levels of fenitrothion were discovered in some samples and are thought to have been present in others.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): 1. Review available information on the predators of the spruce budworm; 2. Provide information on predator biologies, including life stages, modes of attack, and general importance; 3. Summarize the importance of predators and predation in population dynamics of the spruce budworm; 4. Review forest-management practices that enhance predator populations; and 5. List basic literature sources for identifying predators of the spruce budworm.

Key Findings: The information in the article is especially needed at low population levels of the pest so that we can learn how to manage the forest to prevent future outbreaks.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Effects of the insecticide Accothion birds, mammals, fish, and amphibians

Key Findings: Observations in the spray area were made on reactions to Accothion of a great variety of species of flora and fauna present. Accothion showed observable effects on some insects but not on other insects; nor on plants, birds, minnows in a confined pool, tadpoles, frogs, toads, and salamanders.

Monitoring the Effects of Spraying for Spruce Budworm on Songbirds in Maine, 1979

Problem Addressed: Effect on Maine songbirds by spraying against Spruce Budworm

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Test sampling techniques developed by US. Fish & Wildlife Service for measuring bird populations over large regions will suffice, compare areas whose past histories are known to see differences in songbird populations, and establish baseline against which to compare data gathered in future years to see whether secular trends occur in songbird populations and whether differential changes occur in the populations of species more vs. less exposed to the pesticides.
