The purpose of this study was to obtain estimates of the overall growth rates in the spruce-fir forests of northern New England.
The study was designed to estimate the growth rate of the spruce-fir component with an accuracy of plus or minus 10 percent. It
was assumed that the accuracy of estimate for the other species groups would be in proportion to their representation in the
sample. The growth of pulpwood species, especially spruce and fir, was our primary interest. In 1950, little value was placed on
hardwood species for pulpwood; so sampling in hardwood stands was less intensive.
