Given the well-documented preference of spruce grouse for conifer-dominated forest, coupled with the prevalence of clearcut harvesting and post-harvest treatments (e.g., aerial application of herbicides and/or pre-commercial thinning) in conifer-dominated stands during the mid-1970’s to early-1990’s, and given the recent decline in extent and decrease in average patch area of mature conifer dominated forests in Maine, we conducted research on influences of forest management on spruce grouse. Specifically, we evaluated patterns of stand-scale occupancy by male grouse and resource selection by adult females during the brood rearing season in a commercially managed landscape in northern Maine to evaluate responses of spruce grouse to forest harvesting and common post-harvest treatments.
