Following the 1972 egg mass and ground and aerial defoliation surveys in Maine, all the data were discussed at joint meetings of staff from the US Forest Service, land managers, and representatives of Forest Protection Ltd. of New Brunswick, Canada. These meetings resulted in the recommendation to treat 450,000 acres operationally in 1973 with the insecticide Zectran. Some of this acreage involved entirely new areas never before sprayed, i.e., the St. Francis and Telos Lake areas. In addition to the operational spray project, there were three types of experimental spray application.
