This project was initiated in June 1977 as an attempt to complete a problem analysis concerning the ecological effects of wide-spread application of chemical insecticides on Maine's forested ecosystems. It was not the Intent to duplicate the Environmental Impact Assessment Process which is restricted by many constraints, the greatest of which are limited time and data that are directly relevant to the impact in question. In contrast, this review is attempting to synthesize data collected (1) in widely separated geographical areas, (2) under a variety of ecological conditions, and (3) in different pest management .programs using a variety of organophosphate and carbonate chemicals to provide insight into the potential for impacts on natural systems in Maine. Thus, the final report will include much informed speculation concerning environmental impacts in Maine's forested ecosystems as well as documented impacts.
