
The Effects of Stand Composition on Spruce Budworm Population Dynamics

The various effects of forest stand composition on the population dynamics of the eastern spruce budworm are examined. Two population samples, pupal and egg mass, and a defoliation count were taken from four different stands with different amounts of balsam fir, red spruce, and hard-wood. A summary of the budworm life cycle is presented, followed by a discussion of the known host relations of the insect. Finally, the results are given, followed by a discussion of how the results relate to previous studies. The results of this study indicate that stands containing large amounts of balsam fir are more susceptible to spruce budworm infestations that are stands with lesser amounts of fir.
