Early in the Fall of 1974, public and private industry interests recognized the need for more definitive data to substantiate the effects of the current spruce budworm epidemic on Maine's forest lands. Very little information was available on the amount of mortality and its effect on individual stand growth in infested areas. A coordinating committee which included representatives of several commercial landowners, the Maine Forest Service, and the U.S. Forest Service, held a series of meetings and developed a cooperative growth study for much of Maine's Spruce-Fir Region. Several commercial landowners were asked to provide inventory crews for collection of field data from a series of permanent sample plots located on approximately 7 million acres of forest land.
