In 1979, a large -scale program of demonstration areas was established in cooperation with several landowners in Maine to develop and test this strategy under field conditions. In 1980, the first year of targeted spray treatments, an extensive network of permanent plots was established to assess long-term response of the forest to this strategy. Many of these plots were remeasured for the first time during 1985. This note describes trends in three mortality and growth reduction observed during this five-year period, with special emphasis on testing the original hypotheses about differing vulnerabilities among the various stand types.
