The study identified recreation specialists and determined (1) to what extent people stereotyped specialized recreationists, and (2) how typing individuals affected behavior. This study objectively evaluated stereotypes by examining the responses of individuals to visual images of specialized recreationists. The procedure used to obtain data consisted of using photographs of stereotypes of trout fishermen and cross country skiers (ranging from novice to expert) in conjunction with an interview schedule.
