Developing and testing a third party landscape forest sustainability and biodiversity monitoring system

Multiple dates of Landsat imagery were analyzed statewide and for a 1.8 million ha intensive study area in northwestern Maine. Given limited space, this report focuses primarily on results relevant to the intensive study area. A spatial database of private landownership change (1994-2007), composed of parcels which experienced unique histories of ownership change were combined with the time-series harvest maps.
Harvest rates (1973-2007) were calculated for parcels, and summarized by owner and owner change history, land under working forest conservation easement. A forest cover time series (1975-2007) was extracted for each parcel to quantify patterns of forest cover change characteristic of each parcel type.
