Two 10-acre blocks in Indian Township, Washington County, Maine, were clearcut during March and April, 1965. Slash was burned on one block June 11. The amount of fuel that burned is estimated as 28.5 tons per acre. Fire intensity reached 4,323P;tu per second per foot of fire front. Slash smaller than two inches in diameter was virtually eliminated. The very hot fire was successfully held within control lines. ff costs can be reduced, such controlled use of fire may have a place in the management of spruce-fir stands. It is highly valuable for fire control training
