Key Findings: After 7 years, yields of mixedwood treatments were greater than conifer release treatments; yields of hardwood thinning treatments were similar to the untreated control, but with lower densities.

Recommendation: Early successional stands can be effectively managed during early stand development to improve growth and the longer term composition

Problem Addressed: Models for small tree biomass estimates in northeastern North America

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Evaluate additive aboveground component and biomass models for five naturally regenerated hardwood species.

Key Findings: Small tree biomass models currently used to predict woody biomass substantially underestimated biomass at the study site.

Recommendation: Current FAS models may be inadequate for providing reliable sapling biomass estimates in Maine, and new techniques should be developed.

Efficiency of alternative forest inventory methods in partially harvested stands

Problem Addressed: Which inventory methods are best given the distinct spatial and structural heterogeneity in Maine forestlands.

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Compare horizontal point, fixed area, and horizontal line measurement methods in partially harvested stands across northern and central Maine.

Key Findings: Horizontal line sampling proved to be a viable method in post-partial harvest stand conditions.

Recommendation: There are trade-offs between precision and time costs involved in measurement methods under a range of heterogeneous stand conditions.

Is Early Life Cycle Success a Determinant of the Abundance of Red Spruce and Balsam Fir?

Problem Addressed: Regeneration success during changing climates of the Holocene and after harvest

Goal(s)/Objective(s): To determine if early life stage behavior contributes to differences with changing climates and harvest

Key Findings: Seed germination by red spruce was equally fast and complete in warm and cool temperature regimes, while balsam fir germination was slower and less complete in both, especially in the cool regime

The role of vegetation management for enhancing productivity of the world’s forests

Problem Addressed: Influence of competing vegetation on regenerating forests

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Review results from longest-term studies in North America, South Africa, South America, and New Zealand/Australia.

Key Findings: About 25% of studies had volume gains from 100 - 200 per cent. Over half had 50 – 300% yield increases. Three-quarters showed yield gains from 30 - 500%

Recommendation: Managing competing vegetation in young forest stands produces large, early yield gains in forests around the world
