Disturbance Dynamics of Old-Growth Picea rubens Forests of Northern Maine

Problem Addressed: How spatial and temporal aspects of past disturbances shaped the current structure and composition of old-growth Picea rubens forests
Goal(s)/Objective(s): Linking spatial data and temporal data to reconstruct the location and size of former canopy gaps back to 1920, and determine a more general disturbance as far back as 1740.
Key Findings: Persistence of Picea rubens is attributed to the abundance of advance regeneration, the ability to endure suppression and respond favorably to release, and longevity relative to ecologically similar species.

The Efficacy of Salvage Logging in Reducing Subsequent Fire Severity in Conifer-Dominated Forests of Minnesota, USA

Key Findings: Salvage logging reduced the intensity (heat released) of the subsequent fire, but the effect on severity (impact to the system) differed between the tree crowns and forest floor.
