This [1990] report is useful as a first step in building the Department of Economic and Community Development's understanding of value-added and in supporting its efforts to build a research and development capacity. The report sheds light on a number of facets of value-added in Maine. For example, it identifies those Maine industries with higher value-added on average than counterparts in the ¡est of the United Søtes; it also clarifies that a firm's value-added is not entirely a function of its location in the "chain of production.
