The present spruce budworm epidemic began in the region of the Lower st. Lawrence and Gaspe about 1949, approximately on year later than in New Brunswick. It is not known whether the rise in insect population was due to a transition of the local population from the endemic to the epidemic level , or whether it was a result of an influx from adjoining regions; it might well have been a combination of these two factors.
