In the spring of 1979, a project began with the goal of demonstra ting that some steps towards integrated pest management could be introduced into the existing spruce budworm control program in Maine, leading to some reduction in the annual use of chemical insecticides. The project, which subsequently became known as the Green Woods Project, was funded primarily by USDA, Forest Service, State and Private Forestry, and the CANUSA Spruce Budworms Program, but with cooperative arrangements with the University of Maine, College of Forest Resources and with three forest landowner or manager groups that agreed to make land, expertise, and other resources available.
