The spruce budworm has been a focus of concern 1n the northeastern region for the better part of the last decade, as a large outbreak devastated Large areas of the spruce-f1r forest on which the region depends for a significant part of its resource base. Damage has ranged from substantial. portions of the forest in Maine lo the near complete devastation of the forests of Cape Breton island. Altogether moderate to severe defoliation has reached more than 150 million acres in the region.
