The Forest Insect and Disease Survey (FIDS) is an operational unit within the Canadian Forestry Service associated with each of the six regional forest research centres throughout the country. The primary objectives of FIDS are to determine the distribution of native insects and their damage and to detect changes in population or damage levels of certain forest pests. In Ontario, the FIDS unit, of the Great Lakes Forest Research Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, has been heavily involved in monitoring the current spruce budworm outbreak. Staff of this unit have also been involved in planning, timing, and assessing aerial control operations carried out against the budworm by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR). An intensive effort has not been put into budworm parasitoid research; however, the unit has conducted special parasitoid surveys and has participated in experimental releases of the budworm egg parasite Trichogramma minutum. Summaries of these activities are presented in this report.
