Two groups of sportsmen who hunted or fished in Maine in 1965 were marled questionnaires. Information provided by the sportsmen was used to ascertain whether or not a relationship existed between the socio- economic characteristics of sportsmen and their participation rates or sport preference. Primary relationships investigated included residence (resident or non-resident), income, education age, occupation, youth origin, childhood experience in hunting and fishing leisure time avaiLable, and sporting club affiliation in relation to the number of trips afield in 1965 and sport preference.
