Over the past quarter century, many new synthetic compounds, including pesticides, have been dispersed throughout the world in great amounts, and living things have been exposed to chemicals with which they have had no previous contact. Residues of these novel compounds have been introduced into soil, air, vegetation, and water where they persist for varying lengths of time and, presumably, contribute to interactions affecting various life processes.
