Spruce Budworm in the Penobscot River Valley 1974-1978 A Summary of Infestation, Damage, Monitoring and Control

Problem Addressed: Spruce budworm

Goal(s)/Objective(s): Presents the history of budworm population and damage over the past five years in the Penobscot Valley. It also summarizes those attempts made by the State to monitor and control the budworm infestation.

Key Findings: The final map was a good indication of high and extreme hazard areas and was used to delineate the next year's spray blocks where applicable.

Key Findings: The principal beneficial effect of special silvicultural treatment is protection of forests which are the sources of raw materials for wood product mills within and adjacent to the infested areas.
