Forest Inventory and Related Needs to 1992 and Beyond

This report reviews major issues and recommends steps to be taken by the Maine Department of Conservation to best prepare for the 1990-91 US Forest Service survey of Maine's forests. We recommend, among other projects, a focused survey of additional plots in recently cut stands, and a stronger concentration on forest health.
The Forest Survey is of critical inportance to the State's forest landowners, timber users, recreationists and other forest users as well as to the general public. The information and analysis which it generates will set the terms under which citizens of the late 1990s will understand the forest. Identified trends and changes will be used to argue for or against any disparate policy initiatives. Probably not since the 1890s has there been such a wide public awareness that the forest is changing, and such active interest in the subject.
