Traditional measures of volume inadequately describe forest resources. The 1995 inventory of Maine's forest lands included estimates of total forest biomass based on an evaluation of available biomass-estimation techniques found in the literature. When applied to the forest resource inventory of Maine, these regression equations yielded an estimate of more than 900 million dry tons of biomass on timberland, and nearly 928 million dry tons of biomass on all forest land. About 45 percent of the biomass was in growing stock, the remaining 55 percent was in the branches, foliage, and stumps of growing-stock tree; cull trees, savable dead trees; seedlings and saplings; and shrubs.
