Primarily on the basis of growing-space requirements, guidelines on maximum and residual stocking of even aged stands have been developed for many eastern forest types. Comparisons of stocking guides with growth information for northern hardwood, eastern white pine and upland oaks indicate that stand growth of hardwoods peak at densities up to 20 square feet below recommended residual basal area while growth of pine is best at densities well above the recommended residual basal. Stocking concepts based on crown dimensions or growing space need reevaluation, and practical stocking recommendations should be checked against actual response data.
