Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition can have a range of adverse consequences, often marked by increased nitrate loss in drainage waters. Yet, nitrate responses can be difficult to predict, and many factors affect N retention. In the NiRENA project (Nitrogen Retention across Europe and eastern North America), we examined patterns and controls of N retention across temperate ecosystems receiving elevated N deposition from air pollution.
