Recreational use of the nation's remaining wilderness resources has become a prominent land use problem. Attempts to satisfy the increasing demand for wilderness recreation and in turn follow the concept of wilderness preservation have appeared incompatible. This study was undertaken to design and compare alternative recreational development plans of a wilderness area composed of Baxter State Park and the surrounding townships. To accomplish this the future annual; camper night use (one person camping overnight equals one camper night) was first determined; second, an inventory of the recreational resources was conducted; and finally, development plans were designed.
