The purpose of this report is to explore the significance of Maine's forest wood supply and what it means to the future supply of Maine's forest resources. Three comprehensive inventories of the Maine forest as part of the U.S. Forest Service took place in 1959, 1971, and 1980; the Maine Forest Service (MFS) conducted an inventory of the spruce/fir resource in 1986. The MFS also tracked wood use by mills since the 1940s. The data shows the profound changes in wood use that have occurred over time in Maine and provides a backdrop for future projections. The focus of this report is limited to the present and future supply of wood.
