Several simulation studies have been conducted of the budworm-forest ecosystem in eastern Canada and Maine. All show that the current forest protection strategy is inferior to a low egg density threshold policy. The Maine model is a representation of our best, understanding of the budworm forest system. Its policy implications are fairly insensitive to modeling errors which might have been made. Further work is needed both in the field and with models.
