Accelerated Fir Utilization (A.F.U.) involves harvesting and using fir at an increased rate with concurrent reduction in spruce cutting and utilization. The concept is not new. It was suggested in response to the budworm outbreak in 1910 and has been discussed repeatedly since that time.
Because technology provided an option which required less effort than silvicultural treatment--aerial application of insecticides--interest in silvicultural treatment has lagged. The extent of spraying has increased dramatically and brought about environmental concern.
