A simple, graphical method is described for quickly estimating costs of precommercial thinning in dense, young spruce-fir stands using brush saws. The effects of varying stand densities, labor costs, and prior mechanical swath treatments can be analyzed. Examples from Maine's spruce-fir region illustrate the nomogram's use for prediction and sensitivity analysis of thinning costs.
