Prior to the beginning to the budworm control project, larval and bud development sample lots were established adjacent to spray areas. Within these plots, dominant and codominant fir trees were periodically sampled to obtain foliage from the upper midcrown. A bud expansion index was recorded for each of 50 shoots. Foliage was then taken to one of the field laboratories where it was searched for budworm larvae. These larvae were examined to determine the number and percentage in each instar. A development index curve was derived and plotted using a method developed in Quebec. Bud flare was also plotted as an index developed in Quebec.
