Relationship of Site Index and Growth of Even-Aged Spruce-Fir Stands in Eastern Maine to Site Factors

Problem Addressed: If current harvesting trends continued, hardwood removals would exceed growth within a few years and softwood removals, before the turn of the century.
Goal(s)/Objective(s): 1. Describe the sites on which even-aged spruce-fir stands in eastern Maine have become established and developed, 2. Isolate from among selected site factors those most significant in determining site index and other growth parameters, 3. Formulate regression equations expressing the respective effects of the significant site factors upon the site index, growth, and yield of even-aged spruce-fir stands in Maine.
Key Findings: The inclusion of both site and stand variables as independent variables increased the coefficient of determination and decreased the standard error of the mean in all regression equations except the regression of fir site index.
