Satellite imagery has been useful in many natural resource and habitat inventories, but little is known about its application to diversity analyses. Using a classified Landsat TM satellite image, natural community diversity and richness were calculated for a sample of islands in Penobscot Bay Maine... Natural community diversity and richness were calculated for twenty-eight islands. Statistical analysis were used to test the relationships among island diversity and richness and the following variables: Island area, distance from the mainland, marine exposure, isolation and shoreline complexity. No significant relationships were found between island diversity and these variables. However, Patterns of community structure, as influenced by the position of the island within Penobscot Bay, did emerge. Other factors that may contribute to island diversity and richness may be inferred.
