The Waterfowl of a Cat Tail Marsh in Central Maine
- Peppard, John William
University of Maine Graduate School
A waterfowl management study was conducted in Coriana Stream from the spring of 1950 through the spring of 1951. The major part of the investigation was concerned with the life habits of the waterfowl on the marsh, but other phases of the study covered the hunting season, waterfowl food habits, brood banding, and snapping turtle predation on waterfowl.
Following the spring freshet the water level dropped far below that required for optimum conditions for waterfowl habitat. As a result, the waterfowl productivity of the marsh was lowered by the decreased amount of nesting habitat, increased nest losses, less brood cover, and reduction in availability and abundance of the waterfowl food supply throughout the year.
