It is believed that a better understanding of the kraft pulping characteristics and resulting paper quality of budworm-killed balsam fir will enhance the oppotunities for it successful salvage and will help prevent the waste of an important natural resource. Therefore, it was the purpose of this study to evaluate the kraft pulping characteristics of three different balsam fir materials from Minnesota; name (1) green and health balsam fir, (2) 12-month dead balsam fir, and (3) 20 to 22-month-dead balsam fir. Also, the effects of the location of the sample within the merchantable bole of the tree (top middle and bottom) were investigated.
