Intensive field investigations on a forest insect can rarely be conducted without encountering problems in tree structure and physiology. This has been found particularly true for studies in progress on the spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), on the Green River Watershed in northern New Brunswick. These studies are concerned with the population and bionomics of the insect in the field and are a part of the Green River Project. In view of the role of the pollen and bracts in budworm survival, a survey was made to ascertain on what types of balsam trees, and how frequently, heavy crops of staminate flowers are produced.
