For purposes of forest insect surveys the State of Maine is divided into six districts, to each of which a forest insect ranger is assigned. Spruce budworm surveys in 1948 began about June 1 and three men from the New Haven, Conn., forest insect laboratory of the Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine assisted the Rangers for approximately one month. Each district in the spruce fir region of the State was covered thoroughly. The importance of the observation points as an index of the development of a spruce budworm infestation was brought out this year in Maine. Medium to heavy feeding was observed and numerous larvae were collected at certain points in Aroostook County, particularly in the vicinity of Cross Lake and Stockholm.
