Remote sensing is a relatively quick, inexpensive way to determine present levels of forest damage and to estimate the likelihood of future damage in budworm-infested spruce-fir stands. A manual by Olson et al. (1982) describes how to obtain and interpret 35mm color air photos for damage assessment and rating stand for harvest or protection under Lake States conditions.
This leaflet summarized the Olson manual and shows how to rank budworm-infested stands with 35 mm Air photos. It can be used as a checklist during remote sensing operations. For more details on the damage assessment procedure, refer to the Olson manual.
