The spruce budworm, an insect native to Maine, is the most destructive defoliator of spruce-fir forests in all of North America. Over 5 million acres of spruce-fir forests in Maine - more than 25 percent of the state - have been severely infested in recent years. About 150 million acres are threatened in the eastern United States and Canada.
