Depletion of Canada's forest resource by insects and diseases has amounted to more than 80 million m3 in one year, or two-thirds of the annual harvested forest volume. Thus, the threat from forests pests, with which we must compete for a limited forest resource, is enormous. In the Maritimes, where wood shortages are imminent, this type of competition will be felt by all forest land managers. The problem is made more acute as we harvest our native forest and, at considerable expense, replace parts of it with a planted forest, in anticipation of high production and short rotations. The reality that we are competing with forest pests for woo0d fiber will become more obvious when we have established the plantations currently in the planning stage.
