The satin moth, Stilpnotia (+leucoma) salicis L., is an introduced defoliator of ornamental and woodland poplar and willow in northeastern and northwestern North America. In Maine, outbreaks have occurred in stands of bigtooth aspen (Populus grandidentata Michx.) between Millinocket and Baxter State Park since about 1966. The extent, duration, and intensity of satin moth populations in this area is unprecedented in New England Forests.
